Christmas Eve Dinner at 179 Bar & Grill

Inside 179 Bar & Grill in New Rochelle, NY

Christmas Eve at 179 Bar & Grill in New Rochelle, NY proved to be a wonderful experience for both my son and me. This was a first time visit here for us as my son recently moved to New Rochelle, and we wanted to find someplace close to his new apartment. 179 Bar & Grill is close to his new digs, easily found with street or garage parking. We had a 5:30pm reservation and arrived early. The entrance was tastefully decorated with Holiday greenery. The ambience inside was equally tasteful, warm and inviting with low lighting and a lovely, low key vibe.

We were greeted warmly and seated immediately with attentive and friendly service. Ben ordered a beer and I asked for a glass of Chardonnay, both of which were served quickly along with a bread basket and butter for the table, as well as water glasses for each of us.

The menus are iPads with clear and well lit photos of the menu options and selections. A paper menu of the evening’s specials set out on the table offered additional options. Diners could order from the evening specials, from a priced fixe menu or a la carte. Prices are reasonable for the quality and for all of the options. Other reviews offer high ratings for their wonderful, creative cocktails.

Ben ordered the Marry Me Chicken from the Specials menu. This was described as chicken with crusted parmigiano, dried tomatoes, green beans, roasted potatoes in a parmigiano cream sauce. Marked as being gluten-free.

I ordered the Wild Atlantic Salmon entree from their regular menu, pan-fried in a lemon white wine sauce with a side of vegetables and mashed potatoes. And we ordered an appetizer of Homemade Veal Meatballs with marinara and ricotta to share.

Everything exceeded expectations. Beautifully plated with a delicious blend of seasonings and flavors, we both enjoyed every morsel of our meals.

The meatballs had just the right amount of spice. The salmon dish felt light and flavorful, with the veggies providing the right amount of balance to the meal. And Ben devoured his Marry Me chicken in no time, enjoying the blend of taste sensations that this dish provided for him.

No room for dessert. We will be back. It looks like they offer a wonderful brunch as well.

So happy to have found this wonderful gem so close to Ben’s new home. Yet worth the trip from elsewhere. Do try it out in your travels. Reservations recommended.
