Just before our foray to the Edward Gorey House, we stopped for lunch at Skipper Chowder House in South Yarmouth. We were there at 11:30am on a Friday in July, about 1/2 hour after it opened. And it was busy. By the time we left, around 12:30pm, you couldn’t get a spot in the parking lot, and the entryway overflowed with patrons. It is that good!

Nestled along the scenic shores of Nantucket Sound, the Skipper Chowder House has been a beloved Cape Cod institution since 1936. With its beachfront setting and classic New England charm, this family‑friendly restaurant has earned a reputation for delivering both memorable views and hearty comfort classics.

A Rich Maritime Atmosphere
Stepping into their entryway feels like entering a vintage seaside lodge. They have two main dining areas, an indoor dining room downstairs, and a water view deck upstairs. On a gorgeous day, the deck wins out. Picturesque vistas capture the panoramic waterfront views, while nautical décor and casual seating evoke Cape Cod’s warm, relaxed vibe. Limited seating makes early arrivals an imperative move during peak season (mid‑April to mid‑October) when crowds flock to the shoreline. They do not accept reservations.

A Menu Anchored in Tradition
What stands out most is their award‑winning New England clam chowder, celebrated by both locals and tourists. Pair that with perfectly fried clams, lobster rolls, or fresh catch entrées, and you’ve got a winning lineup of classic seafood fare. For those craving variety, their chefs also offer Angus beef options and a solid kids’ menu—ensuring all appetites are satisfied.

They even feature family‑style specials such as the Sacred Cod Tavern, priced around $30 per person and served in shareable bowls—ideal for two or more guests.
We both started with a cup of their Triple-Crown Championship award-winning clam chowder (Winner of Boston, Cape Cod and Newport Chowder Festivals!), and it is clear why this chowder is consistently winning awards. Thick, fresh, creamy, tasty and chock full of chunky cuts of clam, potatoes and veggies, we each savored every bite.

Folks rave about their fried clam chowder as well, their chef’s unique invention, which looks and feels like a crab cake but tastes like their award-winning chowder, with a side of hot sauce.

The Skipper Chowder House is equally renowned for their Lobster Rolls. They offer 3 types.
THE TRADITIONAL LOBSTER ROLL
4 ounces of fresh-made lobster salad with green leaf lettuce. Served the Skipper’s way on a toasted brioche roll.
SKIPPER’S LOBSTER ROLL SUPREME
Half pound of fresh-made lobster salad with green leaf lettuce. Served the Skipper’s way on a toasted French roll.
THE WICKED AWESOME
Half a pound of fresh lobster served hot with butter on a grilled brioche roll.
I had the Traditional Lobster Roll, served as it is described, traditionally, and just as I like it, cold, chock full of lobster meat, without any filler. A bonus is that they offered me a side of onion rings in lieu of the traditional side of chips or fries.

My date tried the Wicked Awesome Roll, and this was just as he liked it, served hot, with melted butter and fries. For someone who didn’t think he got that excited over lobster rolls, this one made him a believer and newfound fan of the hot lobster roll. Not many restaurants offer both.

There are so many other tempting choices on the menu, we will be back to sample more. And the staff couldn’t have been more accommodating, from the warm welcome we received upon entering the establishment to the service offered throughout our stay.

We did not have room to try their ice cream, but, they have an impressive ice cream menu, served at your table or separately at their adjoining ice cream shack outside. Next time. And there will be a next time.

They serve some pretty fancy drinks to boot. Something else to look forward to next time.
