The Cape Cod Museum of Art – A Hidden Gem

Nestled away in the heart of Dennis Village, the Cape Cod Museum of Art (CCMoA) is a cultural treasure with deep local roots and a distinctly creative spirit. Whether you’re a seasoned collector, an emerging artist, or simply someone who finds joy in a quiet stroll through beautiful galleries, this museum offers an inspiring glimpse into the vibrant art scene of Cape Cod and the Islands.

A Museum with a Mission—and a Heart

Founded in 1981 by a group of visionary local artists, the CCMoA is more than just a place to view art—it’s a creative hub dedicated to preserving, promoting, and celebrating the work of regional artists. The collection spans over 4,000 pieces and continues to grow, with new works reflecting both traditional Cape Cod motifs and bold contemporary expressions.

What makes this museum especially compelling is its commitment to showcasing artists who live and work in the region. Each exhibit feels like a love letter to the Cape—its light, its landscapes, its people.

Gallery Spaces & Sculptural Surprises

The museum features seven climate-controlled galleries, each thoughtfully curated to invite exploration and reflection. Exhibits rotate regularly, offering something fresh in every season—whether it’s a retrospective of a beloved local painter or a playful, experimental group show.

While we were there, we enjoyed photographer Mark Chester‘s exhibit, entitled Loo-Loo’s: Restroom Gender Signs, featuring photographs of restroom signs he has taken from his travels around the world. The exhibition will be on view until August 10th 2025.

Chester has another exhibit here entitled Mark Chester Photographs: Sublime to Ridiculous, also on view through August 10th . He will be doing a talk at the museum at 11 a.m. on June 26th entitled “Years of Making: Mark Chester Reflects on His Photography Career.” The talk is free with Museum admission.

Take a look at a few of the Loo-Loo’s on view by clicking through on the arrow, below right.

And read this wonderful review of Chester’s exhibitions in the Cape Cod Times.

A walk through the remaining galleries, including an enclosed porch, revealed yet a number of other treasures.

And there was a display of student work that drew a great deal of attention for the sheer talent these youngsters exhibited.

Outside, the sculpture garden is a serene extension of the museum’s indoor offerings. With works tucked among trees and flowering plants, it’s the perfect place to pause, sketch, photograph or simply enjoy the interplay between art and nature.

Programs That Spark Creativity

The CCMoA also serves as an education center, offering year-round classes and workshops in everything from ceramics to filmmaking. Lectures, artist talks, and concerts in the garden round out the museum’s calendar, making it a lively gathering space for the community.

If you’re visiting on a Sunday, keep an eye out for the Music & More series—casual afternoon concerts that pair beautifully with a slow Cape weekend.
