The Marietta Museum of Art & Whimsy

Nestled in downtown Sarasota, the Marietta Museum of Art & Whimsy is a delightful gem that took us by surprise. As its whimsical name suggests, the museum offers an enchanting experience, full of magical surprises at every turn (click on the arrow, below right for the slide show).

That said, it’s worth noting that the museum’s hours can be a bit quirky, so plan accordingly! The museum is open until May 24th for the current season, then it will close until November 29th. During the season, from late November to late May, it welcomes visitors on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 1 PM to 4 PM. Be sure to check the hours before your visit!

When we finally found a day & time convenient for us that it was open, it was very crowded. Perhaps because of the limited days & times it is open. There is no admission charge but there is a suggested donation of $10 per person, which is gratefully appreciated and well worth the cost. Few people leave here without a smile on their face.

Upon entering, friendly volunteers greet guests and introduce them to the fanciful collections. Throughout the museum, enthusiastic volunteers are available in every room, happy to answer questions and share insights. There are also ongoing presentations by select artists and guest speakers, enriching the experience even further.

Yet, this is a museum where very little knowledge is needed to enjoy the myriad of objects d’art, paintings and imaginative creations comprising its collections. It could serve as a wonderful museum to introduce art to children as there is a playful aspect about every work of art, many of which speak to children’s books and nursery rhymes.

The museum showcases colorful and captivating creations covering a broad spectrum of subjects. You’ll find imaginative versions of practical items alongside quirky, fun objects that serve no practical use at all. The delightful collections extend from the interior of the museum into the inviting gardens outside, creating a magical atmosphere reminiscent of Alice tumbling down the rabbit hole into Wonderland (click on arrow, below right).

No visit to Sarasota should go without a visit to the Marietta Museum of Art & Whimsy. It’s an experience filled with joy and creativity that you won’t want to miss!
