Old Town Pub

An easy, unfussy dinner before Second City, in the heart of Chicago’s Old Town

Not every meal on a trip like this needs to be an occasion. Before heading into Second City for Pandemonium, Please Hold, we wanted something quick, casual, and close by — and Old Town Pub, just a short walk down Wells Street from the theater, turned out to be exactly the right call.

A Neighborhood Fixture

Old Town Pub has held its spot in the heart of the Old Town District for more than two decades, and it wears that longevity comfortably. This is a genuine neighborhood bar rather than a destination restaurant, with the kind of friendly, regulars-know-your-name energy that makes it an easy, low-pressure stop whether you’re a local or, like us, just passing through before a show. On game days in particular, it leans fully into its identity as a sports bar, but on a quieter weeknight it’s simply a comfortable place to sit down, order a burger, and watch the room.

Pub Food Done Well

The menu doesn’t pretend to be anything other than what it is: tavern-style pizza, hand-formed burgers, and classic bar appetizers, all reasonably priced and clearly built for sharing before a night out. We split a tavern-style pizza, and it arrived quickly and hit exactly the comfort-food note we were after. It’s the kind of menu where you genuinely can’t go wrong — reliable, generous portions, and nothing that requires much deliberation.

The Right Pre-Show Stop

What made the evening work so well was the location and pacing. Old Town Pub sits close enough to Second City that there was no need to rush, but far enough from the theater’s immediate foot traffic that the room never felt overrun by other showgoers. It’s a smart, practical choice for exactly this kind of evening: dinner that doesn’t compete for attention with the main event still to come.

The short walk over to the theater afterward turned out to be its own small pleasure. Old Town’s tree-lined streets, historic rowhouses, and easy, low-key charm make for a genuinely lovely stroll in the evening light, past a string of inviting little shops and cafes that made us want to linger and come back in daylight to properly browse. It gave us just enough time to settle into the right mood before the show — unhurried, a little curious about what the night would bring, and glad to be wandering through one of Chicago’s prettiest neighborhoods to get there.

Why It Belongs on the List

Not every stop on a Chicago itinerary needs to be a culinary headline, and Old Town Pub is a good reminder of that. Sometimes the right move before a night of comedy is simply a good burger or a well-made pizza, a cold beer, and a room with no pretense whatsoever. It did exactly what we needed it to do — and did it well.

And sometimes, that’s exactly what a great travel day calls for.
